04 - Beat 'em Bang (ENG)

In Cambodia there is a "Bamboo Train" (“Norry” in Khmer language) and actually it has very little to do with a real train: it’s nothing more than a wooden frame covered with bamboo sticks, connected to two rollers that run on rails and driven by a gasoline engine. Initially used for military operations during the civil war that ravaged the country in the 1980s, today it’s an unusual means of transport between the cities of Phnom Penh and Battambang (350 km). Being a monorail, every time a "train" crosses those Norrys which carry fewer passengers (the maximum is four) it has to be literally disassembled and removed from the track to give way. During that absurd journey I happened to listen, for the only time in a month of travel, to the traditional Cambodian music. In the middle of nowhere, immersed in the plains cloaked in green and dotted with temples.
Field recording:
Many of the sounds re-edited in this piece come from recordings made at Phnom Penh Central Railway Station. The singing theme comes from an old Cambodian film recorded on a local TV in a hostel on the island of Koh Rong.

04 – Beat ‘em Bang (ITA)

In Cambogia esiste un “Bamboo Train” (Norry in lingua khmer) che, in realtà, di treno ha ben poco: non è altro che un’intelaiatura di legno ricoperta di stecche di bambù, collegata a due rulli che scorrono su rotaia e azionata da un motore a benzina. Inizialmente impiegato nelle operazioni militari legate alla guerra civile che sconvolse il Paese negli anni ’80, oggi è un insolito mezzo di collegamento tra le città di Phnom Penh e Battambang (350 km). Trattandosi una monorotaia, ogni qualvolta si incroci un altro “treno”, chi trasporta meno passeggeri (il massimo è quattro) deve letteralmente smontare il proprio Norry, rimuoverlo dal binario e dare la precedenza. Durante quell’assurdo tragitto fu l’unica volta, in un mese di viaggio, che mi capitò di ascoltare musica tradizionale cambogiana. Nel nulla, immerso nelle pianure ammantate di verde e punteggiate di templi.

Molti dei suoni rielaborati in questo brano provengono da registrazioni effettuate alla Stazione ferroviaria Centrale di Phnom Penh. Il tema canoro proviene da un vecchio film cambogiano registrato da una TV locale in un ostello dell’isola di Koh Rong.
